This inspiring and sentimental film is based on a touching true story that took place in 1993 and focuses on youth theater director Liz Evans and her efforts to save the Lyric Theater located in the town of Carmarthen in southwest Wales from closing. We meet Liz Evans (Samantha Morton) while she is working as a theater teacher for a youth acting group, directing productions at a local movie theater.

However, suddenly another vote at a meeting of the city council ends badly for this troupe – it was decided to close the Lyric Theater and demolish the building to make way for a new shopping center. Liz puts on a final production of Oliver! and then, reliving her memories of the building, decides to move out and barricade herself inside the theater in the hope that it will prevent the demolition of the building. Despite the fact that Liz has three children of her own, she seems to be serious about preventing bulldozers from entering the theater grounds and preventing them from starting demolition and then selling the land.

Soon, other members of the community, trying to stop the corrupt deals, join Liz’s mission and start playing films at the Lyric Theater to show the city authorities that people are still using this building, despite the fact that it was declared unusable. Moreover, Liz’s actions inspire the locals to a larger movement to preserve the theater building as part of local history, but they must deal with the corrupt mayor of Carmarthen, Tom (Adil Akhtar) and his entourage, who are in cahoots with a villainous real estate developer (Colm Meaney).
